The Vikings Sweep the Wolves in season series

CAMROSE, AB - Closing out 2021, the University of Alberta, Augustana Vikings defeated the GPRC Wolves in straight sets, 3-0 (26-24, 25-18, 25-18), Sunday afternoon at Augustana Gym.

With the win, the Vikings sweep the season series against the Wolves, having not dropped a set. The Vikings now improve to a 5-1 record heading in the holiday break, while sitting in second place in the ACAC North Division, two points ahead of the King's College Eagles who play later tonight.

Across the court, the Wolves remain in fifth place in the standings with a 2-6 record, holding a two-point lead on both the NAIT Ooks and Keyano Huskies.

In a back and forth battle, exchanging leads, the Vikings preserved to take the first set, which needed extra points, 26-24 as Shae Boyes' kill painted the sideline.

The Vikings jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead to start the second set and forced their visitors to call a timeout. Looking like the timeout may have helped, the Wolves found themselves down only three points and flipped the timeout call to the Vikings. The break proved to be useful once again, as the Vikings settled and eventually took a two-set lead, 25-18.

In the third set, with the Wolves hoping to force a fourth and stay alive, the home squad chipped away at the scoreline, while the Wolves hovered a few points behind through most of the set. However, the Vikings would break the game open and find themselves with their biggest lead of the set, 22-16, forcing the Wolves to call a timeout for a new game plan. The quick break would not be enough as the Vikings went on to take the set and match win, 25-18.

Having to wait until the new year to take to the court once again, the Vikings will take on King's College Eagles (4-1) in a home-and-home series, with the Vikings hosting the Eagles on January 14th. On the other hand, the Wolves will host NAIT (1-4) that same weekend. Catch all the action on ACACTV!
