This week, Vikings Athletics caught up with Augustana Vikings soccer player Sydnee Dallyn to see what she's been up to during the pandemic and how she's been keeping in touch with her teammates. Sydnee is currently in her second year at Augustana and hopes to become an Occupational Therapist in the future.
Q: What challenges and opportunities has this year brought?
SD: This year has been challenging because the team still isn't allowed to practice yet. We have gotten some time in the weight room when COVID restrictions allowed, but it is difficult to keep our skills and fitness up when we are not allowed to practice together with a ball. On the other hand, without having a season this fall, I have had more of an opportunity to train individually, and this allowed me to work on things that I wanted to improve on.
Q: What has the pandemic changed most for you?
SD: The biggest change for me is not being able to be with people and not having practices every day. I miss playing and being with the team.
Q: How have you and the team stayed connected during the pandemic?
SD: During the summer, we checked in with each other through our group chat. Fortunately, some of the team is back in Camrose and it's been great to be together during team workouts.
Q: What are you hoping to achieve in your soccer career?
SD: I hope to improve my game and my team as a whole. We accomplished a lot last outdoor season, and we have the potential to achieve even better things. My goal for next season is to make it into the playoffs since we just missed it last season. Mostly, I want my whole career as a Viking to be just as fun and competitive as my rookie year.
Q: Why did you choose to become a Viking?
I chose to become a Viking because I liked the atmosphere of the campus. I wanted the opportunity to continue playing soccer competitively while getting an education. I also liked how involved the Vikings are with the community.
Q: How do you spend your free time when you are not in the gym or in the classroom?
SD: When I am not in the gym or doing schoolwork, I like to hang out with friends. With Christmas around the corner, we have been doing festive activities like decorating our place, making gingerbread houses, and watching Christmas movies.
