Bendiksen and the Vikings Women's XCR claim Silver

CAMROSE, AB - On the first day of ACAC Championships since March 2020, the Augustana Vikings hosted the conference for the 2021 Cross Country Running Championship at the Stoney Creek Centre in Camrose.

On a beautiful fall afternoon, the trail took runners through 2km and 4km loops within Stoney Creek Park, with the Women running 6km, one 2km loop, and one 4km loop, while the men ran two 4km loops for a total of 8km.

Looking to defend his 2019 individual men's title, Concordia Thunder's Leonard Chesoo claimed his fourth win of the season, coming in first at a blazing 26:18. Chesoo won all three Grand Prix races this season including the second Grand Prix hosted by the Vikings on the same course, narrowly missing his previous time of 26:02.

Meanwhile, in her first ACAC Championship, loan SAIT Trojan women's team runner Makenna Fitzgerald won her third race of the season crossing the line in a blistering 22:20. Fitzgerald was able to string together an impressive season winning both the first Grand Prix hosted by the Medicine Hat College Rattlers and the final Grand Prix hosted by St. Mary's University Lightning.

Rounding out the women's top three runners was the Vikings Reese Bendiksen (24:20), while the Thunders Brandon Toal rounded out the men's top three, with both runners earning silver.

In an impressive result, the Trojan's men's team came across the line in third, fourth, and fifth to claim the ACAC men's team trophy thanks to Keiran Marchand in third (27:52), Landon Swartz in fourth (28:16), Yahye Jama in fifth (28:20), Jackson Sinclair in 17th (31:42), Justin Galpeau in27th (34:24), and Jonathan Samper in 31st(35:48).

Equal to the task was the Thunder's women's team who claimed the ACAC women's team title after Emma Derbyshire came in third (25:32), Morgan Spruyt in sixth (26:39), Taylor Chamberlain in seventh (26:43), Anna Peacocke in eighth (26:46), Gillian Nachtigall in 20th (29:02) strung together five excellent times.

Also earning spots on the team medal podium were the Vikings women earning silver and the Thunder's men claiming bronze. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens teams both earn some hardware, coming in second and third place, respectively.

After wrapping up a successful ACAC season, teams will now rest up before making their way to Calgary for the CCAA Cross Country Running National Championship hosted by St. Mary's University on November 13th, 2021.
