Improving to 2-0 on the season, the Vikings swept the Wolves in the open season weekend series in straight sets.
CAMROSE, AB - In front of a sold-out crowd for their home opener, the Augustana Vikings secured a weekend series sweep of the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves winning 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-16) on Sunday night at Augustana Gym.
With the win, the Vikings improve to a 2-0 record on the season and sit in a three-way tie for first in the division. The Wolves however are still in the hunt for their first win of the season.
After trailing 4-1 to start the opening set the Vikings battled back early jumping ahead 18-12, before forcing the visitors to call a timeout, However, the short break would not be the difference maker as the Vikings won the set 25-15.
Finding new life, the Wolves put up a fight midway through the second set bringing the score within three points, 22-19. The push proved to not be enough with the Vikings finishing off the set by deflecting a kill off the Wolves block to take the set 25-21.
Jumping out to a quick 9-4 lead in the third frame, the Vikings made quick work of their guest winning the set in a similar fashion to the second with a deflection off a Wolves block and out of bounds, securing both the set and the win.
Looking ahead the Vikings will head to Edmonton to take on the NAIT Ooks on Friday, November 19th for game one of their home-and-home series, first serve at 8:00 PM MT. They will then head home for a Saturday night showdown at 8:00 PM MT. The Wolves meanwhile, will also make the trip to Edmonton to take on the Concordia Thunder on Friday and Saturday.
