John was born in Regina, Saskatchewan but grew up in Edmonton, Alberta. He was selected as the
Vikings Women’s coach in August 2019 after establishing one of the top high school programs in
Alberta at St. Albert Catholic High School (Skyhawks). From 2013-15, he also served as an assistant
coach at Grant Macewan University, under renowned coach Rob Poole, as they transitioned from the
ACAC (winning the ACAC championship, 3rd at CCAA) to USport competition. John then spent three
years (2015-18) as an assistant with the University of Alberta Pandas, learning from longtime coach
Scott Edwards.


John graduated from the University of Alberta (Edmonton campus) with a BA degree and a B.Ed. in
1992, and was fortunate to start his teaching and coaching career in St. Albert, Alberta. Originally, he
was the SACHS boy’s coach until 2001-02, when John, his wife Angie and daughters Emilie and
Sarah, participated in a teaching Exchange in Western Australia where he was also able to play
competitive basketball in Australia’s respected club system. Upon coming back to Alberta, he
became an assistant coach with the Men’s program at Grant MacEwan in 2003-04 and switched to
coaching females at SACHS as well as being appointed the Athletic Director, which he did for over
10 years. John was fortunate enough to also help create the inaugural Sports Medicine, Sport
Performance and High Performance Physical education programs at his high school.


Coach Dedrick holds a Train to Train NCCP certification as well as having completed the NCCP
Coaches Evaluation program in the sport of basketball. He is also Co-Founder, with Dave Oldham of
Spruce Grove,, of the well respected Panthawks Basketball Academy for female athletes. Multiple
post secondary athletes have participated as part of this program since 2013. The program is now
affiliated with Basketball Alberta, where John has also served as either head coach or assistant
coach with various zone or provincial teams. In St. Albert, John ran the successful Hawks Combo
Camp for 10years, teaching the fundamentals of both Volleyball and Basketball to junior high school
age athletes.


John is now semi-retired, having moved on from teaching and is operating his own local business in
St. Albert while commuting to Camrose to coach. His wife, Angie continues to work for the City of
St. Albert and his oldest daughter Emilie is enrolled in Art school in Calgary, while his youngest,
Sarah is a setter for the Vikings Women’s Volleyball team.
