Home snow brings solid showing for Augustana skiers
The Augustana Nordic Sports Team raced on home snow this weekend as Camrose hosted Alberta Cup 5 and 6 – Ole Uffda Chase. There were two events this weekend, a skate technique sprint on Saturday and a classic technique distance race on Sunday. The sprints included a qualifier followed by 3 kings- court heats, 6 competitors per heat, and the Stony Creek Stadium was buzzing with energy as athletes raced the 750m loop. Ten Augustana athletes, five men and five women, competed alongside over 200 other athletes of all ages from around the country in the sprint race on Saturday. Sunday morning was a little chilly, but by race start, the conditions were fantastic. Five men raced three laps through the Stony Creek Valley for a total of 11.25km, while five women raced 8.7km. Three Augustana athletes also took part in the 3.75km sport race. Hot-shot rookie Reese Bendiksen took gold in both the sprint and classic distance races in the Senior women's category. At the same time, Josie Middleton won a bronze medal in the senior women's sprint on Saturday. Overall, Augustana had a solid showing; competition was high, and team spirit was higher for the entirety of this action-packed weekend! GO VIKINGS!
