The University of Alberta Augustana Men’s Basketball team is pleased to announce the addition of Cooper Nelson to the 2021-2022 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference season (ACAC) season roster.
“I'm really excited about Cooper's commitment to the Vikings. He will be a great fit for our family atmosphere as he is a strong character-driven individual who cares deeply about his academic and athletic success,” says Head Coach, Dave Drabiuk. “He possesses a versatile skill set and the type of athletic attributes that made him a sought-after recruit both at the CCAA and U SPORTS levels. He's a long defender and has explosiveness in transition that will fit well into our style of play.”
Nelson, a 6’5” guard from Strathmore, started playing basketball at the age of eight alongside his older brother before progressing to play at the Rumble in the Bronx basketball tournament – a premier youth basketball tournament with notable alumni such as NBA All-Stars Kyrie Irving, Kyle Lowry and Kawhi Leonard.
“College Basketball has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid and I am grateful for this opportunity to go to a place where I feel comfortable and to live out that dream,” says Nelson. “I am excited to be a Viking!”
Pursuing a degree in kinesiology and physical education, Nelson hopes to then further his education in physical therapy or sports psychology.
“Cooper has had great mentors and coaches during his development, and I appreciate the work that everyone has done to prepare Cooper for the next level,” adds Drabruik.
